🎨 Muir Beach Holiday Arts Fair (Muir Beach)
🗓️ Saturday, Dec 6, 2025 (10:00 am – 5:00 pm) & Sunday, Dec 7, 2025 (10am – 4pm)
📍 Muir Beach Community Center, 19 Seascape Dr, Muir Beach, CA
Shop for one-of-a-kind gifts in a truly magical coastal setting at the Muir Beach Holiday Arts Fair, a Marin tradition now in its 50th year. The rustic Muir Beach Community Center, perched on a hillside overlooking the Pacific, is filled to the brim with over 40 local artists and makers selling hand-crafted wares. You’ll find everything from artisan jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and woodwork to whimsical ornaments, wreaths, and home goods – all lovingly made in Marin and the Bay Area. Beloved local groups join in too: the famous Muir Beach Quilters offer cozy quilts and fabric crafts, and the Volunteer Fire Department sells logo hats and gear to raise funds. Enjoy delicious home-baked treats and hot drinks as you browse (food and beverages available on site), and soak up the friendly community vibe. With its warm, festive atmosphere and ocean views, this fair is as much a holiday outing as it is a shopping trip.
🎟️ Admission Free entry. (Purchases benefit local artists and community projects.
👉 Pro tip Make a day of it by taking the scenic drive out to Muir Beach via Highway 1 – the views are gorgeous but the road is winding, so take your time. Parking near the Community Center is limited; carpool if you can, or be prepared to park along nearby streets and walk up. It can be brisk by the coast, so bring a jacket.

🎁 Novato Holiday Tree Lighting Festival (Novato)
🗓️ Saturday, Dec 6, 2025 | 4pm – 7:30 pm
📍 Downtown Novato – Sherman Ave & Grant Ave, Novato, CA
Downtown Novato kicks off the season with an old-fashioned Holiday Tree Lighting Festival that has something for everyone. The evening features live music and dance performances by local youth groups, hands-on kids’ arts and crafts and cookie-decorating stations, and a cheerful street fair where you can shop local vendor booths while enjoying treats from Novato’s shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms. Santa Claus and his elves will be waiting in “Santa’s Village” for kids to share their wish lists and take photos. At 5:00 pm, keep your eyes on the sky – Santa makes a dramatic arrival on a Novato fire engine with lights flashing! The crowd then gathers around the huge tree in front of City Hall as Santa leads the countdown to the tree lighting at 5:30 pm, igniting thousands of twinkling lights to oohs and ahhs. This free, family-friendly festival brings the whole community together for a night of joyous holiday spirit.
🎟️ Admission Free (festival open to all).
👉 Pro tip Grant Avenue will be closed for the event – look for parking in the surrounding neighborhood or public lots (try the city lot on Machin Ave and Delong Ave). The Shop & Stroll vibe means downtown stores will be open late, so you can get some holiday shopping done during the festival. Bundle up! Novato nights get chilly, but a cup of hot cocoa from a vendor or downtown café will keep you warm as you enjoy the festivities.

🎅 Winterfest – Downtown Mill Valley Holiday Celebration (Mill Valley)
🗓️ Sunday, Dec 7, 2025 | 2pm – 6pm (Tree lighting at ~5:30 pm)
📍 Downtown Plaza (Depot Plaza & Lytton Square), Mill Valley, CA
Downtown Mill Valley transforms into a winter wonderland for Winterfest, the town’s landmark holiday festival and tree lighting ceremony. From 2 pm onward the Depot Plaza buzzes with live music and dance performances, kids crafting and games, and even a miniature electric train chugging around Lytton Square giving free rides to delighted children. Santa Claus will roll in (rumor has it he might arrive in style, perhaps a convertible as in past years!) to greet families and hear wishes. As dusk falls, everyone gathers for the grand finale: the new Mayor leads a countdown and the big tree in the plaza bursts into light around 5:30 pm, followed by cheers and caroling. It’s small-town holiday charm at its best – and it’s all free fun for the whole family.
🎟️ Admission Free.
👉 Pro tip Street parking in downtown Mill Valley fills up fast on Winterfest day, so consider walking or carpooling, or park at the Depot lot early. Bundle up in layers – the event is outside and temps drop once the sun sets. Many local eateries around the plaza offer “Winterfest” specials and easy takeout, so you can grab a hot cocoa or bite to eat and enjoy the festivities.

🎶 Maria Muldaur’s Holiday Swing Show – Jazz & Blues Christmas (Mill Valley)
🗓️ Sunday, Dec 7, 2025 | 2:30 pm (Doors 1:30 pm)
📍 Sweetwater Music Hall, 19 Corte Madera Ave, Mill Valley, CA
Marin’s own music legend Maria Muldaur (of “Midnight at the Oasis” fame) presents a special afternoon of holiday swing at Sweetwater Music Hall. Tired of the same old carols? So is Maria – so she’s put together a show of “wonderfully hip, swinging, humorous and irreverent Christmas songs” drawn from her favorite jazz and blues artists. Backed by her Jazzabelle Quintet, she’ll serve up toe-tapping “Xmas tunes for hipsters” – think playful swing and vintage R&B holiday gems instead of overplayed shopping-mall music. It’s a refreshingly fun take on seasonal tunes, delivered by a Grammy-nominated singer who’s been exploring American roots music for over 50 years. Grab a seat, order a drink or brunch bite, and get ready to snap along to some soulful Christmas serenades in this iconic Marin venue.
🎟️ Admission ~$35 (all ages welcome) – tickets required (advance purchase recommended; selling fast).
👉 Pro tip This is a seated show and Sweetwater’s cafe will be open, so arrive when doors open at 1:30 to snag a table and enjoy lunch or a cocktail before the music starts. Parking in downtown Mill Valley can be tricky; if you can’t find a spot on Throckmorton or Miller Ave, use the public lot behind the theatre.

🍕 Creekside Pizza & Taproom (San Anselmo)
🕒 Mon–Sun Noon–9pm
🍸 Happy Hour 4-5pm
📍 638 San Anselmo Ave, San Anselmo, CA 94960
Creekside sits right by the creek, lights strung overhead, heaters glowing in winter, the smell of wood-fired crust in the air. It’s a favorite because it feels like a neighborhood hangout, not a chain-stop. The pizza is legit, the tap list is tight, the vibe is relaxed, the feed moves fast.
Why locals love it:
Simple ingredients, fired-right crust, rotating local craft beer, and a low-key outdoor patio that somehow always turns into a longer stay than planned.
💡 Insider tip The seasonal white pizza is quietly famous here. Pair it with a local IPA or lager on draft. Sit on the patio if you can, even when it’s cool out. Bring layers, order by the slice at busy hours, and stroll Imagination Park after.

📢 Local Buzz

💧 Water Bill Reality Check – Marin Water
A homeowner asked if ~$150 a month feels right for a single-family home with 3 adults, washer, and a moderate garden on drip and drip irrigation. Consensus: yep, sounds normal for Marin. Shared comps came in around $280 every 2 months for 2 adults, 3 teens, and drip irrigation under MMWD.
The thread lit up about front-loaded fees (often near $100 before a drop is used), not scaled to home size or features. Someone living alone confirmed they still average ~$150 year-round. Multiple commenters noted that actual water usage can land at 10% or less of the bill, which means small apartments pay the same base fees as big homes.
One smart save: residents can apply to waive certain capital maintenance fees by contacting MMWD directly. Others jumped in that long rate-freeze periods finally caught up and now deferred maintenance costs are showing in bills.
Hot take from the thread: people love conserving, but the current fee structure discourages responsible use by punishing everyone equally instead of fairly.
👉 The takeaway Residents may gripe about fees, but many agree the perks balance it out — watershed trails, nature access, and fire support are part of the deal here. Less emotion, more shared math, pure Marin forum energy.

👻 Strangest Things Seen in Marin
A Reddit thread asked a very Marin question: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen out here that no one would believe? The answers read like local folklore. One person found a perfectly tuned guitar in Blackstone Canyon with a sticky note that said “Play me.” Another swears they saw a red and blue light silently follow their car on the way to Bolinas, long before consumer drones were a thing.
The real time capsule was Marin 31. Dozens of locals chimed in remembering a late-night tantric sex show hosted by an older couple, often in their underwear and sometimes nude, teaching “Sex and Spirit” with props and puppets. Everyone thought they imagined it until others confirmed it was very real public access TV in the 80s and 90s, complete with wrap skirts, sandals, and full Bay Area free-speech energy.
From UFO sightings on Mt Tam and over Lake Nicasio, to a creepy circle in the woods near Bolinas Ridge, coyotes “high on mushrooms” charging cars on Highway 1, and kids finding blood soaked clothes by a San Anselmo creek that vanished minutes later, the thread turned into a rolling campfire story. There were lighter moments too, like a Porsche driver in Mill Valley who actually let someone merge, a Rivian that did not block an intersection, and the eternal Marin shock of spotting a face without fillers.
👉 The takeaway Marin has its polished side, but scratch the surface and you get ghost stories, UFO lore, odd late-night TV history, and a community that clearly remembers every strange little detail.

🍻 Blackout Wednesday in Marin
A Reddit thread kicked off with a simple question: is “Blackout Wednesday” just a Marin thing or everywhere? Locals quickly set the record straight. The night before Thanksgiving is widely known as the biggest drinking night of the year, often nicknamed “Opening Day of Party Season.” People chimed in from the Midwest, Virginia, and beyond saying it has been a thing since the 90s.
The Marin twist is where everyone drinks. With Silver Peso closed after a car crash and the building up for sale, folks joked about people posting up at Red Boy Pizza instead, while that empty wine and beer bar on Magnolia misses the moment. In true Marin fashion, commenters immediately started redesigning it: darker lighting, a pool table, and a more local vibe to grab all those Peso regulars.
The thread turned into pure bar nostalgia: Matteucci’s in San Anselmo was “couldn’t even move” packed, Brown’s in Novato drew shoutouts for Blackout Wednesday crowds, and old favorites like the Bit, the Viking, DeBorba’s, Moylan’s and Ted’s all got name-checked. One person remembered a full-on pre-Thanksgiving riot at Ted’s that spilled onto Sir Francis Drake, complete with chairs flying and Rage Against the Machine blasting.
👉 The takeaway Blackout Wednesday is nationwide, but the stories are very Marin. Packed corner bars, legendary dive lore, and a running side conversation about which spot on Magnolia will step up to claim the Peso crowd.

💎 Hidden Gem

🍷 Picco (Larkspur)
🗓️ Mon–Thu 5pm–8:30 pm, Fri–Sat 4:30 pm–9pm, Sun 4:30 pm–8pm
📍 320 Magnolia Ave, Larkspur, CA 94939
Picco is the kind of place you slip into after work, grab a glass of wine, maybe a wood-fired pizza or a shareable small plate, and feel like Marin slowed down a notch just for you. With soft lighting, exposed-brick walls, and a mix of indoor/outdoor seating, it radiates cozy-meets-chill energy.
💡 Why this is a gem:
The food lands every time: crispy-edged pizzas straight from the wood oven, fresh seasonal plates, and wines that pair without pretense. The vibe — low-pressure, no-frills, no rush — makes it a dependable go-to for dinner out or a dinner-in mood.
👉 Pro tip Show up early (5:00–6:00 pm) for easier parking on Magnolia and less crowd. For groups or date night, split a couple pizzas, order a carafe of red, and take a patio seat if you can — heaters and string lights make it feel like a secret backyard dinner under Marin stars.
