Hey Marin 👋
Halloween may be behind us, but Marin is still buzzing with color and community. From Sausalito’s family-friendly kayak tours to the artisan aisles of the Marin Arts & Crafts Show, there’s plenty to enjoy as the county settles into fall. Sweetwater brings a dose of rockabilly energy with Southern Culture on the Skids, while the Marin Symphony fills Kentfield with classic warmth. Out west, MALT invites hikers to explore open ranchland, and Strawberry Village revs up with its morning car social. We’re also spotlighting Fairfax’s beloved Hummingbird Cafe, the creative reuse movement in San Anselmo, and a fiery Reddit debate on Marin’s homelessness strategy — plus a look at shifting Halloween traditions across local neighborhoods. Finish it all off with a pint and a tune-up at Novato’s Bicycle Brüstop, our hidden gem of the week.

It’s high-energy Americana at its quirkiest and most fun, perfect for an upbeat weeknight outing.

🥾 MALT Hike at Millerton Creek Ranch (West Marin)
🗓️ Friday, Nov 7, 2025 | 10:00 am – 1:00 pm (arrive 10–11 am)
📍 Millerton Creek Ranch (Point Reyes Station/Marshall area), Marin, CA
Spend a morning hiking a gorgeous private ranch opened by Marin Agricultural Land Trust. Millerton Creek Ranch spans 862 acres of windswept coastal hills between Point Reyes Station and Marshall. The self-guided loop is ~3 miles with moderate climbs, rewarding you with views of Tomales Bay and rolling pastures. You can do as much or as little as you like, enjoying the fresh air, possible wildlife sightings, and even a chance to take home farm-fresh eggs from the ranch hens.
🎟️ Admission Free (RSVP required).
👉 Pro tip Register online to reserve your spot – MALT hikes can fill up since they’re limited openings of protected lands. Wear sturdy boots (the trail can be slippery after rain) and dress in layers for coastal weather. You can start anytime between 10 and 11 am, but arriving on the early side gives you cooler temps and plenty of time to savor the scenery. Don’t forget water and a camera for the panoramic bay views!

🚗 Marin’s Motor Social (Mill Valley)
🗓️ Saturday, Nov 8, 2025 | 8:00 am – 10:00 am
📍 Strawberry Village (parking area), 800 Redwood Hwy Frontage Rd, Mill Valley, CA
Calling all car enthusiasts – start your Saturday with an informal cars & coffee meet-up. Marin’s Motor Social takes over the Strawberry Village parking area every second Saturday morning. Hosted by Porsche Marin and local car lovers, it’s a low-key showcase of everything from classic roadsters to exotics. Stroll among gleaming cars, chat with fellow gearheads, and grab a caffeine boost while you admire the lineup. It’s a friendly, all-ages scene for anyone who appreciates cool cars (or just an excuse to get up early and enjoy a crisp fall morning).
🎟️ Admission Free.
👉 Pro tip If you want to show a car, arrive on time – spots start filling before 8 am. For attendees, parking is easiest across the street once the lot fills with show cars. After 10 am, stick around: Starbucks and local eateries open up, as do shops in Strawberry Village, so you can turn your early start into a fun breakfast or shopping outing.

The college venue offers an intimate acoustic where every note shines, from the thrilling opening by contemporary composer John Psathas to the romantic sweep of Brahms.
🎟️ Admission ~$20–$85 (reserved seating).
👉 Pro tip Reserve tickets early – the 300-seat theater is cozy, and a full house is expected. 🫧 The Amazing Bubble Man (San Rafael)
🗓️ Sunday, Nov 9, 2025 | 2:00 pm
📍 Showcase Theater, Marin Center, 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael, CA
Give your inner child (and your actual kids) a treat with a show that’s pure joy. Louis Pearl, aka The Amazing Bubble Man, has dazzled audiences worldwide with the science and artistry of bubbles for over 30 years. He’ll create giant bubbles, bubble volcanoes, fog-filled bubbles, even people inside bubbles – crazy tricks that elicit gasps and giggles from all ages. It’s part magic show, part science lesson, and 100% fun. The Marin Center’s Showcase Theater is an intimate space, so every seat is close to the action (and maybe close to a popping bubble or two!). Expect a lot of laughter and wonder as bubbles do things you never imagined possible.
🎟️ Admission $34 adults, $23 kids (17 and under), or $100 family-four-pack. (All tickets include Marin Center fees.)
👉 Pro tip This show often sells out, so grab tickets in advance if you can. Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes early – not only to snag parking by the theater, but also because the general admission seating is first-come, first-served. If you’ve got little ones, try to sit near the aisle; they may get a chance to volunteer or catch a bubble! And don’t worry about the mess – you’ll be too busy having fun to mind a bit of bubble mix in your hair.

🍳 The Hummingbird Cafe (Fairfax)

A Fairfax favorite with deep local roots, The Hummingbird Cafe is known for its Southern-style brunch and laid-back small-town energy. Regulars fill the cozy dining room every weekend for comfort dishes like shrimp and grits, fried chicken and waffles, and Cajun omelets. It’s soulful food made with care. No shortcuts and no pretense — just hearty plates and friendly service that make it feel like home.

📢 Local Buzz

🧵 Spare – Creative Reuse Shop (San Anselmo)
A Reddit thread lit up this week when a local crafter announced the opening of Spare, a new nonprofit creative reuse and fabric shop in downtown San Anselmo. Located inside the old theater building at 324 Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Spare aims to keep gently used art and craft supplies in circulation — an eco-friendly alternative to big-box chains and online shopping.
Founded by a longtime Marin sewer who used to volunteer at Sebastopol’s “The Legacy,” Spare stocks donated fabric, notions, fine-art materials, and children’s craft supplies, all sold at resale prices. The shop’s mission is simple: reduce waste, inspire creativity, and make crafting affordable again.
The community response has been overwhelmingly positive. One commenter wrote, “We (Marin crafters) NEED this store!” while another added, “I just forwarded this to my wife — she was displaced by the Jo-Ann’s closure and is thrilled there’s finally a local option.”
Spare plans to host craft circles, reuse workshops, and sewing meet-ups, turning the once-quiet theater building into a lively hub for Marin’s maker community.
👉 The takeaway Spare is more than a shop — it’s a creative movement rooted in sustainability, community, and Marin’s do-it-yourself spirit. If you love to sew, paint, or create, this is your new happy place.

🏘️ County Officials Reassess Homelessness Strategy (Marin County)
A recent r/Marin thread dove into the county’s latest plan to “reassess” its homelessness strategy — and locals weren’t holding back. The article cited officials saying they were “poised to take an intentional look at where we are, and where we are headed,” which Redditors immediately mocked as “a great line of nothing.”
The biggest frustration centered on the county’s talk of hiring consultants and launching ad campaigns while facing the loss of state and federal funding. One user summarized it bluntly: “Facing the elimination of federal funding, officials want to hire expensive consultants and buy advertising.” Another added, “Don’t forget the second and third and fourth consultant opinions.”
A few comments called for more practical approaches — like using former military bases for transitional housing — but most agreed that Marin’s response has been long on bureaucracy and short on results. The thread also spiraled into a broader debate about homelessness funding, UBI, and whether past stimulus spending fueled inflation, showing how complex and polarized the issue has become.
👉 The takeaway Marin residents want solutions, not slogans. As one commenter put it, “We’re poised to take an intentional look at where we are… and that’s exactly the problem.”

🎃 Where Did All the Trick-or-Treaters Go? (Marin County)
A lighthearted r/Marin thread turned into a full Halloween census this week as locals compared notes on a noticeably quieter night across the county. From Sleepy Hollow to Novato, many neighborhoods reported only a handful of candy-seekers. “I got 30 kids last year… this year just one,” one commenter wrote.
The consensus? Halloween crowds have consolidated into a few hot-spot streets like Bamboo Terrace in Terra Linda, Dominga Ave in Fairfax, and Mariner Cove in Corte Madera, where parades and block parties draw big groups. Others noted that Sun Valley in San Rafael and Glenwood still go all-out, complete with theme houses, live bands, and even wine or Jell-O shots for adults.
Several users guessed that family parties, school events, and fewer young kids might explain the shift — while one summed it up perfectly: “Just gotta know where to go, community will tell ya where to be.”
👉 The takeaway Traditional neighborhood trick-or-treating might be fading, but Marin’s spirit isn’t. The fun has simply migrated to the streets that make Halloween a full-blown community celebration.

💎 Hidden Gem

🚲 Bicycle Brüstop (Novato)
📍 830 Grant Ave, Novato, CA
A one-of-a-kind stop for gear heads and casual riders alike, Bicycle Brüstop pairs a full-service bike shop with a sidewalk patio that serves craft beer. It’s equal parts serious cycling hub and relaxed neighborhood hangout — perfect when you want to ride, browse, or just kick back. Locals praise it for expert mechanics, a friendly vibe, and the fact that you can grab a pint while your bike gets tuned.
Why it’s a gem:
- Combines adventure (bike gear & rental) with something social (the Brüstop patio) — rare in Marin.
- Situated in Novato’s downtown Grant Ave corridor, giving it small-town charm with serious service.
- Whether you’re prepping for trails or just looking for a casual after-work ride and drink, it hits both.
- It’s locally owned and part of Marin’s biking culture, not a chain.

👉 Pro tip:
Bring your bike early on a weekend for a tune-up and stay after with friends for a craft brew and good conversation. Parking in downtown Novato is easier than some Marin spots; grab a spot near Grant Ave and stroll over.
