Comedy Nights, Cookouts & Community Buzz
Week of June 24 – June 30, 2025
🫧 Marin Bubble
June 24, 2025
by Chris Marsh
Hey Marin 👋
This week is peak Marin energy: jazz on a street corner, comedy in the plaza, and a radio campout that somehow feels both old-school and totally cool. We’ve got a legendary alt-rock frontman turning HopMonk into his personal backyard stage, baseball nights that feel like a small-town block party, and a deep dive into the secret life of bees (plus mead, obviously). Over in Ross, it’s all about free art, quiet gardens, and budget-friendly beauty. And in true local fashion, the buzz is blowing in from every corner — wind-related Reddit meltdowns, a “suspicious texter” saga, and a group plot to turn a vacant theater into Marin’s next nightlife hotspot.
🎭 Cool Events This Week

🤣 Comedy in the Plaza (Outdoor Comedy Night)
🗓️ Thursday, June 26, 6:00 pm
📍 Mill Valley Downtown Plaza
Mill Valley’s town square turns into a one-night-only open-air comedy club, with professional comedians delivering laughs right in the heart of downtown. Locals and visitors gather under the redwoods for this much-loved summer tradition – an easygoing evening where big-name headliners and rising Bay Area comics share the stage. Expect a warm, community vibe as you kick back on the plaza for some seriously funny Marin moments (yes, laughter sounds even better under giant redwood trees).
🎟️ Admission Free (no tickets needed).
👉 Pro tip Show up 30–45 minutes early to snag a good spot on the plaza. Bring a blanket or low-back chair for comfort – and a cozy sweater, because our Marin evenings can get chilly even in summer.

🥘 David Lowery Cookout Concert (Live Music)
🗓️ Friday, June 27, 6:00 pm (Doors Open at 4:30)
📍 HopMonk Tavern Beer Garden, Novato
’90s alt-rock legend David Lowery – frontman of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven – brings his iconic tunes and storytelling to Novato as part of KC Turner’s outdoor Cookout Concert series. This early-evening show pairs rock music with actual barbecue: grab a craft beer and let Lowery’s hits (you might know “Low” or “Take the Skinheads Bowling”) wash over you as the grill sizzles nearby. The vibe is intimate and upbeat – think summer backyard party meets indie-rock show, with plenty of space to chill out or dance by your picnic table.
🎟️ Admission $30 in advance ($35 day-of); add $54 ticket for show + BBQ dinner plate. All ages welcome.
👉 Pro tip Come when doors open at 4:30 pm to grab a good picnic table seat and order food before the music starts. HopMonk’s beer garden is mostly standing/table seating, so early birds get the prime spots (and first crack at the BBQ!).

🧢 San Rafael Pacifics Baseball (Minor League Game)
🗓️ Friday, June 27, 6:00 pm
📍 Albert Park, San Rafael
Nothing says community fun like a summer night at a San Rafael Pacifics baseball game. Our own independent league team plays at historic Albert Park, where the vibe is pure small-town Americana – think the crack of the bat and the smell of popcorn in a cozy ballpark nestled among oak trees. Kids chase foul balls and local families cheer from the old-school grandstands as the Pacifics take on their rivals, the Dublin Leprechauns, in the Pecos League. Grab a hot dog and a local beer (yes, there’s a beer garden) and settle in for some innings; you might even meet the Pacifics’ mascot “Sir Francis the Drake” hopping around high-fiving fans. Between-inning contests and the friendly crowd make it feel like a community block party with baseball as the backdrop.
🎟️ Admission $10 general admission (buy at gate or online) – a bargain for pro baseball!
👉 Pro tip Albert Park is intimate, so there’s no bad seat in the house. Parking can fill up on game nights; consider parking a few blocks away or making an evening of it by dining in downtown San Rafael before the first pitch. Bring a glove if you’ve got kids in town – they’ll be eyeing those foul balls, and you’ll be a hero if you catch one for them!

🎤 Live on the Avenue (Free Concert Series)
🗓️ Friday & Saturday, June 27–28, 6:00 – 8:30 pm
📍 Downtown San Anselmo (Creek Park & Town Hall Plaza)
San Anselmo transforms its downtown into a vibrant block party with Live on the Avenue, a weekly summer concert series. Two stages mean double the fun: one at Creek Park’s amphitheater (tucked under redwoods with a picnic-friendly lawn), and another at Town Hall Plaza spilling music into the street. Stroll between bands, dance on the car-free avenue, and enjoy outdoor dining as local musicians play everything from funk and soul to indie rock. It’s a unique blend of small-town Marin charm and Bay Area vibrancy – you’ll see kids twirling, neighbors mingling, and maybe an impromptu dance party or two under the stars.
🎟️ Admission Free (public welcome).
👉 Pro Tip Downtown streets close for this event, so parking can be tricky – arrive early or bike in. Bring a blanket or lawn chair for Creek Park’s grass, and feel free to grab dinner from a local eatery to enjoy picnic-style during the show (the town’s restaurants and ice cream shops stay open late for the occasion).

📡 Marin Amateur Radio Field Day (24-Hour Ham Radio Demo)
🗓️ Sat–Sun, June 28–29, 2025 (11:00 am Saturday through 11:00 am Sunday)
📍 Stafford Lake Park (Picnic Area 1), Novato, CA
Ever wonder how people communicate when the power’s out and cell towers are down? Ham radio enthusiasts have you covered. During this nationwide Amateur Radio Field Day, Marin’s ham radio operators from the Marin Amateur Radio Society will be camped out at Stafford Lake Park for 24 hours straight, practicing emergency communication skills and contacting fellow operators across the country. Curious visitors are welcome to drop by anytime to see the action: tall antennas, Morse code beeping away, and friendly hams eager to explain their gear. It’s a quirky, educational camp-out where you’ll witness real “when all else fails” radio networking in action – a slice of old-school tech that’s surprisingly vital in disasters. Families and kids with an interest in science or scouts will get a kick out of seeing radio signals connecting Marin to places hundreds of miles away!
🎟️ Admission Free (public welcome).
👉 Pro Tip The event runs round-the-clock, but for the liveliest experience, stop by Saturday afternoon when operators are in full swing (and not too sleep-deprived). The park is open and sunny, so pack sunscreen, a hat, and water. You can bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it by the lake while you learn a bit about ham radios. No RSVP needed – just show up and say hello!

🐝 Bee Experienced at Heidrun Meadery (Beekeeping & Mead Tasting)
🗓️ Sunday, June 29, 2025, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
📍 Heidrun Meadery, 11925 State Route 1, Point Reyes Station, CA
Participants at Heidrun Meadery suit up in beekeeping gear for a hands-on hive adventure, where they’ll harvest honey and later enjoy a taste of the mead crafted from those very hives (Point Reyes Station).
Spend a sweet Sunday morning in West Marin learning about bees and sipping sparkling mead. At Heidrun Meadery’s “Bee Experienced” workshop, you’ll join beekeepers Bonnie and Gary for a flower-to-flute journey through the art of apiculture. After a brief intro, you’ll don a full bee suit and venture out to the meadowy apiary, where hives buzz with activity. Under expert guidance, you’ll help open a hive, pull out honey-laden frames, and even hand-extract fresh honey right on the spot. Sticky fingers guaranteed! You’ll jar up a sample of the estate honey to take home, then see how that honey gets fermented into Heidrun’s unique champagne-style mead. The morning wraps up on the patio with a relaxing mead tasting – floral, bubbly, and well-earned after your beekeeping work. It’s an intimate, nature-filled experience that’s equal parts educational and delicious.
🎟️ Admission $135 per person (tickets required in advance).
👉 Pro Tip Advance tickets ($135) are a must for this limited-capacity session. Wear closed-toe shoes and comfy layers (the bee suits go over your clothes and can get warm). If you’re nervous around bees, don’t worry – the suits keep you safe, and the hosts will make sure you feel comfortable. Plan to arrive on time (10:00 am sharp) so you catch the safety briefing. After the workshop, consider heading into nearby Point Reyes Station for a picnic or lunch – you’ll have your own jar of honey, so maybe pick up some local cheese or bread to enjoy with it!

🍽️ Underground Eats

🍕 The Junction Beer Garden & Bottle Shop
📍 226 CA-1, Mill Valley (Main Street, near Miller Ave)
Tucked behind an unassuming facade on Mill Valley’s Main Street, The Junction is a cozy beer garden that’s quietly building a cult following in town. Think craft brews, wood-fired pizza, and a seriously chill outdoor courtyard. It’s perfect for a low-key date night, an after-work meetup, or a family dinner under the string lights.
• Why locals love it This is not your average brewpub. With over 100 beers on tap and piping hot pizza fresh from the wood-fired oven, it nails the relaxed and elevated vibe Marin folks crave.
• Flavor vibe Crisp IPA or tart saison in hand, with a perfectly chewy Neapolitan-style slice. Add in shareable plates like crispy Brussels sprouts or charcuterie boards that are dressed to impress.
👉 Pro tip This place fills up fast on weekends, especially after 6 pm. Swing by right when they open or book a courtyard table in advance. Bonus: the cozy indoor-outdoor setup is dog-friendly, and Mamie Benbow Park is just a block away if the pups need a break to sniff and stretch.

📢 Local Buzz

🍃 Windy Spring? More Like “Marin Wind Tunnel”
Marin locals have been collectively losing their cool over an unusually blustery spring. One frustrated resident on Reddit even dubbed Marin a “windy hellscape” after weeks of relentless gusts whipping through towns like San Rafael and Terra Linda. Nextdoor threads turned into group therapy sessions about trashed patio umbrellas and spooked pets, as people commiserated (apparently studies show wind makes people cranky). Still, a few quirky optimists are thriving in the breeze – one Redditor joked they’re out building mini wind turbines and flying kites to take advantage of the gales. For everyone else, the consensus is clear: we’re so ready for Marin’s annual summer calm to kick in already!

🗣️ Nextdoor Drama: “Suspicious Texter” Sparks Outrage
A post on Nextdoor had neighbors warning each other about a “suspicious guy texting in front of condo complex.” Cue the usual Marin uproar. One commenter joked it was “the epitome of Marin entitlement.” Another quipped that if checking your phone while waiting for someone counts as suspicious, “we’re all criminals under surveillance.” Reaction was fierce and hilarious — “My vote for next Mayor of Marin” one user mocked. It’s a classic example of local watchfulness gone overdrive — our safe streets are great, but thanks to Nextdoor, even texting is suspicious.

🍿 Corte Madera Theater for Lease? Let’s Pool Resources
A very 2025 Marin-level Reddit brainstorm popped up recently in r/Marin: someone spotted the vacant Corte Madera theater and suggested locals could band together to lease it as a combined concert venue, bar, and restaurant. The top-voted comment? “My community would kill for more nightlife”—ding, Marin’s collective household thoughts right there. Someone even pitched stand-up comedy nights. Opportunity meets optimism in the thread, as neighbors weigh in on whether a crowd-funded theater revival could be the nightlife shake-up Marin’s been craving.
